La Bayadère, Act III – The Kingdom of the Shades
Created in the late 19th century, this ballet tells the story of a bayadère (temple dancer) named Nikita who falls in love with a prince. The prince, however; is pledged to Gamzatti, a princess who conspires with the temple Brahmin to kill Nikita using a poisonous snake! Upon Nikita’s death, the prince slips into an opium-induced dream and enters The Kingdom of the Shades. The third act of La Bayadère, often referred to as The Kingdom of the Shades, is amongst the most celebrated and poignant scenes in all of classical ballet.
Concerto Grosso #1
With music by Ernest Bloch, this work is a neo-classical gem. The ballet is a tour-de-force of seven women, choreographed by Tyrone Brooks, former Dance Theatre of Harlem principal dancer and current artistic director of Tallahassee Ballet.
Gâité Parisienne
Choreographed by BalletNova’s Associate Artistic Director Constance Walsh, this original work is set to the famous Offenbach score. The ballet captures the “adventures” of the many colorful guests who visit a Paris café. And yes, there is a Can-Can!
Guest Artist GinDance performs exerpts from Lost and Found
GinDance Artistic Director Shu-Chen Cuff delves into basic human instincts to continually chase our dreams and desires, often at the expense of or overlooking what we already have.
