NovaBigs is a mentor-managed, volunteer organization that provides collective and individual support for Big Brother / Big Sister mentoring matches in Northern Virginia (separately referred to as “Bigs” and “Littles”). NovaBigs’ purpose is to organize events for matches in order to enhance the mentoring experience. Every Big in the Northern Virginia region is a member of the Northern Virginia Council and is always welcome to attend Council meetings and to help us plan events for Bigs and Littles.
NovaBigs was named the 2011 Intégrate Volunteer Award group winner by Volunteer Fairfax for making a tremendous impact on the local Hispanic community through volunteerism. “This volunteer-based program is an excellent example of successful community engagement, determined to create positive influences for children” – Volunteer Fairfax, September 2011
NovaBigs enjoys 501(c)(3) status under the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a nationally recognized one-to-one mentoring program for at-risk boys and girls. Forbes annually recognizes Big Brothers Big Sisters as a top ten charity because of our efficient use of donations (85% fundraising efficiency). In addition, a research study found that on average at-risk boys and girls are 46% less likely to use illegal drugs and 53% less likely to skip school when they have a Big Brother / Big Sister mentor.
