Celebrate the holiday season with area matches at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area Annual Holiday Party on Saturday, December 5th at the Howard University Armour J. Blackburn Center from 11am-2pm! There will be plenty of games to play and BBBS will provide each little with bowling shoes to use at the center’s bowling alley. Pizza, soft drinks and holiday cakes will also be provided.

FREE Tickets Available for “Family Concert: Let’s Make Music” Show

Capital City Symphony has generously donated 20 tickets for 10 matches to “Family Concert: Let’s Make Music” at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on Saturday, November 22nd @ 2:30 PM. The show has a musical instrument petting zoo 30 minutes before the event, where kids can come and meet musicians and check out the cool instruments!

You will need to claim tickets at the Atlas Performing Arts Center Will Call.

BBBS National Capital Area The BIG Celebration Set for November 4th

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area will host The BIG Celebration on Wednesday, November 4th from 6-9 pm at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD.

During the event, BBBSNCA will honor their Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year, highlight the value of mentoring and reinforce the importance of their mission. Michael Hargis will be honored as Big Brother of the Year and Kelley Watson will be honored as Big Sister of the Year

Event tickets are $250 each and current Bigs may purchase tickets at a special rate of $100 each. Limited FREE Tickets Available for Peter Pan Live

97.1 WASH-FM is inviting ten area matches for a special afternoon to see “Peter Pan” at the Threesixty Theatre in Tysons Corner on Saturday, June 27th.

Below is an itinerary for the day:

8:30 am – All guests arrive at the Metro Center station for an escorted VIP ride on the “Neverland Express,” a specially decorated Metro car on the Silver Line. There will be a dedicated area on the Metro Center station platform, where all guests will be able to pick up their tickets to the show, along with the opportunity for guests to take photos before departing for the show. WASH-FM will provide all matches with the Metro Day Passes when they check in.

9:15-9:20am: The “Neverland Express” will leave Metro Center for Tysons Corner.

10am: The “Neverland Express” will arrive at at Tysons Corner and all guests will be escorted up the large atrium on the mezzanine level for Peter Pan-themed party.

11am: Guests will leave party to attend 11:30 am performance.

After the show and at their leisure, all guests are able to use their metro passes to return back to their original departure point. The return trip is not an escorted event.

FREE Conference for Youth interested in Legal Profession

Do you have a middle or high school-aged little interested in the legal profession? Students ages 12-18 are invited to attend the 7th Annual Conference H.Y.P.E. (Helping Young People Excel) in Washington DC.

The conference takes place July 21-22 from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm at the Fairmont Hotel in Washington DC and is FREE for attendees. It is co-hosted by The National Black Prosecutors Association and the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

Workshops are designed for middle to high school-aged youth to:
1) expose youth to the legal profession
2) encourage youth to pursue career in law or law enforcement
3) expand their understanding for the law
4) importance of developing leadership skills and preparing for college

FREE Tickets to Celebrate Fairfax Festival

The Department of Administration for Human Services has generously donated a limited number of complimentary passes to the Celebrate Fairfax! Festival for Bigs and Littles. The fair begins on Friday, June 5th and continues through Sunday, June 7th. It’s an outside event held in the Government Center parking lot, with rides, food and music.

Area Matches invited to march in Independence Day Parade

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area has been selected as one of the groups to participate in the July 4th “America’s 2015 Independence Day Parade” in Washington, DC.

The parade steps off at 11:45 AM on July 4th and will be over by 2 PM. Report time on parade day would be around 10:15AM.

There is a reviewing stand area along the parade route where all the parade groups are announced. It is located at 16th/17th Street and Constitution Avenue.

BBBS-NCA is looking for at least 30 matches that would like to march in the parade down Constitution Avenue representing Big Brothers Big Sisters. Participants will wear a Big Brothers Big Sisters T-shirt, khaki pants or jeans, carry American flags and “Fabric Stars” in the parade provided by the parade organizers and our Big Brothers Big Sisters banner.

Each fabric star takes five people to carry; one for each of the points of the stars. The stars are made out of light fabric and weigh next to nothing. This star is no bigger than 18 inches by 18 inches.

FREE Tickets for Duke Ellington School of the Arts Benefit Concert

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area has 100 free tickets available for area matches to attend a benefit concert for the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. The concert will take place at The Warner Theater in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, May 20th at 7:30 p.m.

Ten-time Grammy Award winner Bobby McFerrin will headline the concert and there will also be performances by students from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

The Warner Theater is located at 513 13th Street, NW.

Internet Safety Video Contest for Littles Ages 13-18

NetSmartz, the premier online safety program of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, is inviting teens to submit a 30 to 60-second video that answers the question “What’s one thing teens need to know about being safer online?”

Who can enter: Teens ages 13-18

Deadline: May 12th, 2015

Prizes: There will be three winners. 1st place will win a $500 gift card, 2nd a $350 gift card and 3rd a $150 gift card. The winning videos will also be promoted on our websites and social media channels.

Encourage teens to think about their own online behaviors and how they can “speak up for safety!”
