If you wish to volunteer as a Big Brother or Big Sister please contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area.
Welcome to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Here are a number of steps you can take now and within the first six months to make the challenge of mentoring just a bit easier.
- Sign up to receive e-mail from the council. The council uses e-mail list to announce ticket opportunities, news & notes, upcoming events, and council meetings or social hours.
- Read a brief overview of the council and find out who the council officers are.
- Visit the Calendar page for a list of upcoming council events.
- Check out the News & Notes page for the most recent headlines.
- Sign up for the National Office BBBS Newsletter.
- See what other mentors have done with their Littles in the past. The Activity page contains a number of detailed activities prepared by our mentors complete with an overview, tips, directions, and cost.
- Visit the Events page to find out what group events we do throughout the year.
- Read about the Louis White fund. Louis White is the pioneer and founder of the council and the fund bearing his name is something you may wish to take advantage of in the future.
- Read about Most Valuable Kids (MVK). We receive tickets from MVK frequently.
- Attend a council meeting. Council meetings are scheduled quarterly and all Northern Virginia Bigs are encouraged to attend. Council officers will guide the meeting but everyone has a voice and is encouraged to play an active role in the council's efforts.
- Attend a council social. Like council meetings, socials provides the opportunity to meet other mentors like you in a relaxed setting. We generally meet at an area pub and order appetizers and drinks. It's a great way to get to know others, share experiences, and just have a fun evening out. See the Calendar for the next scheduled council social.
- Prepare one activity write-up for our Activity page. Pick a favorite activity you recently shared with your Little and provide other Bigs with the "scoop". There's a contest going on right now and you just might win something for writing one up.
- Play a role in planning or help out in one event. This avoids putting the burden on the same people to plan all of the events. You need not be a professional planner...just willing to lend a hand. Ask a council officer how you can help.
- Participate in our annual fundraiser.
